Gear Review: Kelty Galactic 30 Sleeping Bag.

A fantastic shoulder season and summer bag here for $159.00

Many people hate the restricted feeling of a mummy bag, and although I own one (Hyke & Byke Eolas 0) I cannot wait for the higher temperatures when I can bring along this bag instead. Unfortunately, if you plan on doing year-round camping, your kit will require 2-3 bags to get you through (mine is 2 bags) with relative comfort.

So, assuming appropriate temperatures (about 45 degrees and above) this bag is fantastic for several reasons:

  1. It weighs a respectable, but not ultralight, 2.5 lbs.

  2. It can zip up to a matching bag to make a double.

  3. The down is incredibly lofty and "pillowy".

  4. It stuffs down to 15 x 7.5 into the attached stuff sack.

  5. It works great as a quilt.

  6. The "old fashioned" rectangular shape is so much more comfortable than a mummy bag, giving you room to move around.

  7. The 50D polyester outer is very comfortable.

  8. It earns a "Top Pick" at Outdoor Gear Lab and a 4.4 star rating on Amazon (where last season's model is listed at $95.00.
