My Take
In my recent trip report on Clouds Rest, I was lucky enough to have a single day on the trip where my full back pack was not needed as we summited as part of a day hike from our camp.
I own several day packs, but the logistics - basically weight and size - made them impossible to bring given my "stuffed to the brim" back pack.
So I took a chance with the Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack. I was nervous. 9-10 miles with a non-padded back pack with my lunch, rain jacket, first aid and 2 liters of water - how would it hold up?
Well, pretty perfectly as it happens. This pack folds up to about the size of a tennis ball, weighs about 4 ounces and is remarkably comfortable for an 18 liter pack. Made of 40d Denier rip stop nylon, with a main pouch and a mini pouch as well as an external water bottle holder, this bag delivers on weight, strength, features and quality.
It does not have padded shoulder straps, but bear in mind that this is designed to be thrown in a pocket at the lightest weight possible! Even without the padding, it felt comfortable over the course of 9 miles, and did not chafe in any way. There is no back padding however, so sharper objects should be placed forward in the bag.
